Who started it? via Gavin's Blog August 29th, 2008 at 04:48

image Kirsty Wark is still using the line that Saakashvili himself started the war. At the very least, we do not know who started the conflict on August 7/8, and for the BBC to assume that they do is unprofessional. There are various accounts of who started the conflict, most recently from Michael Totten in Georgia, who asserted in no unncertain terms that it was Russia who started the most recent conflict. Saakashvili himself denies starting it. At this juncture it might be better to stop asking Saakashvili how or why he miscalculated. It might be better to ask who did start it. ShareThis...

image If you ask Nina what were her favourite places we visited, she would answer Sydney and Cusco. Nina and I are very alike. It's been two weeks since we left Cusco, and I haven't yet blogged on the town itself, even if I have mentioned it obliquely a number of times. Time and distance, if I give them the chance, are waiting to rob me of my memories of this wonderful town, and so before that happens I'd like to take you on a walk. When you turn left at the door to the Hospedaje San Blas, you walk downhill on the narrow and impossibly slippery footpaths of Cuesta San Blas. The cobbled road is wide enough for one car, and it's rarely free of traffic. At the end of the road, you cross to the pedestrianised route that leads past the famous 12-cornered stone, expertly set in place by the Incas and...

Electric Picnic - my must-see acts! via BifSniff » Frank August 28th, 2008 at 11:35

image Ok, legging it here to get packed for the Electric Picnic… in case anyone is doing last minute research online for who they should see, here’s my must-see list. Times and stages are provisional because Electric Picnic organisers have not released the official schedule, if I thought it was a cynical ploy to get more of us to buy those timetables for around your neck at about €25 a pop or something after paying €240 for a ticket I would NOT be happy. Especially seeing as they seem incapable of producing a usable timetable - it’s always impossible to figure out. There is LOADS of other great music, and plenty of clashes, but below are my MUST-SEE’s. Thanks to the kind folks on Twitter including rinkyrink, nialler9 and Elimare for their help in dicovering some...

image Murphy’s Ice Cream did champagne sorbet at the Rose of Tralee. Check out the great pics. Meanwhile the Crossanator talks Rubix and Roses. Great pics of damaged and baked computer goods from Joe in PutPlace. Geeks may cry. Light from heaven. Anthony has a lovely post about the Media Training I did in Cork yesterday but his pic of the urinals in the Cork Airport Hotel shows how the lighting almost looks like rays from heaven directing you to go for a pee. The hotel is also the venue for the Digital Media Island event tonight. Come one, come all. It should be a good evening with a few tech demos and lots of networking. SoundCheck is hosting a pre-Picnic party @ Spy, South William St, on Thursday with DJ sets from Adrian Crowley, Sinead Ni Mhordha and the SoundCheck DJs. Should be great...

Travel plans via Gavin's Blog August 28th, 2008 at 05:07

image I’ve been working hard to prepare for a significant amount of traveling in the coming months. I have pretty much finalised my timelines, with all flights booked and accommodation sorted. Blogging, in a variety of forms, will be as regular as circumstances allow. I should warn everyone that I will be playing with and testing a variety of new formats and all of these efforts should be considered strictly BETA. Some of it might be iffy, some of it might be boring, some of it might be something you could laugh at, but it will all be genuine effort to better tell stories. During my travels I hope to update and upload regularly, using this blog as a testing platform for new ways of telling stories. Video, photos, audio and the written word, with the intention of using technology to...

No Alcohol via In Photos dot org August 27th, 2008 at 21:34

image No drinking on the street. This reminds me of an incident several years ago when I was in town with a group of friends on a Saturday night. This was before I started drinking, and my friends bought cans of beer in an off-license. The guy behind the counter warned them the Guards were about watching for people drinking alcoholic beverages in public and they seemed to heed his warning until they got across the road and popped open their cans. Sure enough, within 2 minutes a Garda was there! He took their names and addresses, and asked them to stop drinking, and of course gave them an awful fright. I followed a chastened group of lads to the pub. Don’t even know why they wanted to drink outside as the pub was just around the corner. Could have been the “poor student” in...

WP Super Cache 0.7 - the dupe content killer via Holy Shmoly! August 27th, 2008 at 21:07

image WordPress.org user, “definitelynot” discovered a bug in the WordPress plugin, WP Super Cache that could expose blogs to duplicate content penalties. Unfortunately this affects every blog that uses the plugin in “ON” or full “Super Cache” mode, and has URLs that end with the “/” (forward slash) character. If the plugin is on “half on” mode, you’ll be fine. The problem is that an anonymous user might visit a legitimate URL, ending with a slash, the plugin then creates a static file out of that page, which is then used when people visit the same URL. Unfortunately if someone links to that URL without the ending slash, a visiting browser or search engine bot won’t be redirected to the proper URL, they’ll be served...

How much did it cost? via While Stocks Last August 27th, 2008 at 18:12

Now that we're back, and we know how much we actually spent (as opposed to what we had budgeted for) I can publish the finances for the trip. I've taken out some details - in particular the home running costs which vary for everyone (and in any case are none of your business thank you ;-) ). Before clicking on the link, which will bring you to a Google spreadsheet, there are a few things to note about how we organized the budget. The first page of the spreadsheet is the most interesting one. The main section shows our predicted breakdown of costs by country and category. Then to the right there are the more sobering columns: actual expense and difference between it and the budgeted amount. The bottom line? We spent EUR 58,400 (US$85,700/GBP46,800), not including costs of keeping things...

Crewger - A Site for Irish Filmcrews & Makers via Cormac Moylan August 27th, 2008 at 18:33

image Crewger is an organisation dedicated to the advancement of the Irish film community by facilitating the production, promotion and exhibition of original content by film-makers of all ages and backgrounds working in Ireland today. Crewger is very much a social network for those involved or wanting to get involved in the Irish Film Industry. The site offers discussion forums, user profiles, a directory of users with their qualifications/interests listed and site even offers its users a blog-type-platform for article publication. One such article is titled ‘The Lessons of In Bruges‘ and is a very enjoyable analysis of Colin Farrel’s performance, the national and international cultural side of the movie and of course the direction. While I like the idea behind the site and...

Maybe the audience will like it too but getting a reaction is the goal. One hint: It involves air travel. I won’t say anymore. The one with sausage snobbery amongst other things via Down with my Life by Vic Barry August 27th, 2008 at 11:10

Like many things in this blog, this post may seem a bit "out there". But it makes sense, like every other post! Its been suggested that I explain my sausage snobbery at length on the blog. An elaboration of sorts. Over the last few years, Ive had a great love affair with cooking, and I still do. And when you start removing your pants to cook books and frying pans, you pay a bit more attention to the actual food you buy and cook with. So a while back I started paying attention to the pork content in sausages. For as long as I can remember, any oul pack of sausages would have been horsed into the shopping trolley. Then, when I started the love affair with spatulas and the likes, we started getting sausages that had 80% pork content. How can I describe the difference?Well, take the movie I am...

What! The Canon EOS 50D announced already? via In Photos dot org August 27th, 2008 at 10:01

image Yes, yes, boo hoo, oh woe is me, my Canon 40D arrived on the day the new Canon 50D was announced. If only I had waited, my photos would be so much better with the Canon 50D. Yeah right. I’ve already stated before that the equipment behind the camera is the most important part of image making. Sure, the camera does matter, but DSLRs are getting to the stage PCs got to a few years ago. Upgrading doesn’t significantly change the game. I’ll upgrade again in maybe 3 years. No rush. The Canon 50D looks sweet though. 15MP sensor, better ISO, better LCD. Nice upgrade. Roland has linked to a few of the sites previewing or discussing the Canon 50D. The Rob Galbraith page is probably the most readable, but the DPReview preview has a neat comparison table to compare the Canon 50D...

ComReg: The problem to telecoms solutions in Ireland via Damien Mulley August 27th, 2008 at 05:53

image ComReg are the telecoms regulator in Ireland. Their job is to make competition in telecoms healthy which should result in better offers and great pricings. Recently they had another consultation and decided that eircom’s wholesale price for a wholesale broadband product (we’ll call it that for now) needed to come down in price. This was an extensive consultation and was really drawn out. So they decided on a new price. All the competition of eircom said “Yay”. But eircom didn’t like it and went to Court about it, which they are well entitled to do. Even before they went to Court, ComReg’s own staffers were fairly open in thinking eircom would win in Court. But the Courts are on holiday now so we’ll all have to wait. Except we don’t. ComReg...

Ye olde church via In Photos dot org August 26th, 2008 at 21:16

image This church in Castletownbere in West Cork looks like it may have seen better days but by the looks of the mowed grass it’s probably still in use. The Canon 40D was delivered today. I could have posted a sample picture but I didn’t have time to shoot anything interesting besides a few snaps of family. Loving the 3″ LCD on the back of the camera, it’s so quiet compared to the Canon 20D, hardly any noise at ISO 400, and experimenting with the auto ISO mode. That should help with street photography where light conditions change so rapidly. Back to School the Healthy Way with Organico! via Organico Bantry August 26th, 2008 at 14:01

image At this time of year we get parents coming into Organico looking to boost their child’s immune system, prevent the scourge of headlice or help calm their children down, as the return to school can cause anxiety levels to go through the roof! As an immune system boost, we would recommend a liquid tonic such as Kindervital, which is made from all natural fruits, vegetables and herbs with vitamins added in case the school-day diet is lacking. If a child was prone to colds, Children’s Echinacea from A.Vogel could be added to Kindervital to give extra protection. Both can be taken at breakfast time with juice. As a headlice treatment or preventative, we offer Riddance, a shampoo made from Neem oil which has very powerful anti-lice action, though it is gentle on the scalp, smells...

The more official blurb states: Crewger is an organisation dedicated to the advancement of the Irish film community by facilitating the production, promotion and exhibition of original content by film-makers of all ages and backgrounds working in Ireland today. While there are discussion forums out there, there’s nothing much webified about the Film Industry in Ireland. Crewger offers a nice way of finding crews for films with their search facility and building a community and forging links. In short Crewger is a social object for film in Ireland. The one with people in sheds via Down with my Life by Vic Barry August 26th, 2008 at 12:23

Morning, afternoon and all those pleasantries. A while back I came up with a simple text poll that asked the question, are you listening naked. And over 1 in 2 people, listen to Cork Talks Back with Victor Barry, nekkid. Now, that poll is coming around again in the next few days, so get stripping.Last night, another question was posed by yours truly. "Where are you listening?". Its easier for the audience to see what I look like via the web, but its difficult for me to imagine alot of the audience, naked or otherwise. So, being a curious fella, I wondered aloud where do people actually listen to the show.Boats, Baths, Cliffs, Mountains, Tractors, Car Boots and Sheds were just a selection of what I got back via text. In particular, sheds seemed to be the outright winner when it came to...
