WP Super Cache 0.9.9 via Holy Shmoly! February 8th, 2010 at 18:14

image Well, the new WP Super Cache is available now. This release adds experimental object cache support. Don’t go looking for it unless you have an external object cache already. It won’t show up. I recommend using the Memcached object cache. Some of the other major changes include more translations: Chinese (Pseric), Ukranian (Vitaly) and Japanese (Tai). The Italian and Japanese translations have since been updated but not included in 0.9.9. You can grab them from the languages directory if you don’t want to wait until the next release. If you have WordPress Mobile Edition installed the plugin will grab the list of mobile user agents from that and warn if your .htaccess is outdated. And, a small but significant change is that the PHP cache loader will use the static...

So That Was January… via Close Watch February 8th, 2010 at 16:26

So now I have to work for two. For me and Soltan Karl. Soltan is my first alter ego (or, if you will, 'heteronym'). He does very short, minimalistic work. He would never create anything longer than five minutes. Simple ideas, but sometimes very dense. His works are concentrated in a way that Le Cain's would never have the confidence to be.He is the author of the notorious 'Soldeck' videos on Youtube. And I am the author of this author. I hope my friends will forgive my sensationalistic little subterfuge in announcing his existence. But, hey, 'shwobiz' and so on... (In fact, only one person guessed that The Soldeck Cycle -to give the work its proper name- was, shall we say?, created through my agency...)We have been working very hard over the past six weeks: long, visionary nights of...

Around the World via James Galvin February 7th, 2010 at 22:42

image It has been a busy few months. Since September I have spent more time abroad than in Ireland, which I’m assuming is a very good thing considering how things have been. In January, I came home to chaos and ruptured roads layered in the Grade ‘A’ grit (specially imported from Spain). The huddled masses of Cork like a scene from ‘Children of Men’, mumbling obsessively about government incompetence and Judgement Day weather conditions. Leaving the dazzling Cork sunshine behind Singapore Saigon Bali, do not make eye contact with the evil monkeys, especially the small ones Sydney, just a quick look around New Zealand. Fly-fishing in the sunshine on Christmas Day in Tongariro park. Helicopter trip to White Island (greatest thing ever). That green lake in...

Mobile Firefox needs some work. via Branedy February 7th, 2010 at 21:51

I downloaded and tried out Firefox Mobile a few days ago and while it seems to be very useful (and actually fun to use), I discovered yesterday I was having serious battery drain issues. I had thought that I had gotten passed this, it was disturbing that the problem had returned. I was afraid that I was finally going to be required to reflash my phone. Then while Googling the issue, I stumbled upon a discussion about the Mozilla JVM runtime that gets installed as part of Firefox and it turns out that it’s not exactly perfected on the Nokia N900 yet, Functional, but it spins up the CPU in the background, using up the battery. So I un-installed it with the App Manager and I’m back to the regular Nokia browser only, which is just fine....

The Mills of Cork Corporation grind slowly. via Despod's photo and comment blog. February 7th, 2010 at 18:12

image On December 7 2009 I posted a picture showing litter outside the Boardwalk restaurant in town. On December 10 I emailed the Environment Section of Cork City Council complaining about the litter - after all the Council tells us that they take littering seriously. However a reply didn't seem to be forthcoming so on January 7 I resent the email to Environment but also copied in the Corporate Affairs section as they are the guardians of the Customer Charter. No response from them either. Judge my surprise when I received an email from the Council on January 20 - a good six weeks after my initial contact. In it I was told that they examined the area on January 4 and it was found to be clean. I did wonder if they would have taken action sooner if it was a small shop owned by a nobody...

Jeckle & Hyde via Gavin's Blog February 7th, 2010 at 17:58

image Our esteemed Senators have been at it again. Hold onto your hats. Senator Donie Cassidy kicked it off: Donie Cassidy (Fianna Fail): Senators Fitzgerald, Coghlan, Quinn and Norris congratulated the Jekyll and Hyde foundation for the wonderful work it is doing. Senator Fitzgerald outlined the huge difference between the cost of the services being provided by the foundation and those provided by the HSE. It is something we must examine—– Frances Fitzgerald (Fine Gael): It is the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. Dominic Hannigan (Labour): Jekyll and Hyde is something different. Donie Cassidy (Fianna Fail): My apologies. It is the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation…. Your tax euros hard at work there....

Marmolada via Riemann's Cut February 7th, 2010 at 15:04

I got tagged for one of those, "I want back-links so I'll invent a meme" things. Oh ok, without the cynicism this time :) "Your Favorite Photo & Why". Favorite anythings are impossible so I've picked an arbitary photo, which I do like a lot however. I spent three weeks in the Italian Alps (The Dolomiti) back in 2000 (it doesn't sound that long ago but it was 10 years now!). I was invited over by an Italian friend (whom I've grr'ishly not spoken to in years; must rectify that!). We got to know each other over our mutual admiration for Martina Ertl, a German Alpine Skier. To say the Dolomites are amazing is to put it lightly. The whole place was complete visual-sensual shock. Even using ones eyes with stereo-vision, grasping notions of scale became a farce. At times it was impossible...

The Jedward Angel via In Photos dot org February 6th, 2010 at 22:11

image Bishop Lucey Park in Cork City was the location of a wonderful display of angel statues. They were decorated in all sorts of ways and even had one dedicated to Jedward! Adam had a great time running around them, and had loads of fun playing with another boy named Nathaniel. Ma Deleas via Munster Pubs February 5th, 2010 at 22:16

Over Christmas i got the opportunity to visit this gem of a pub on Tower Street on the outskirts of Cork City. The city center was thronged with Christmas revellers so a trip here was most welcome. Brendan introduced me to Ma Deleas and i must say that i am glad that he did. He is a regular there but i got just as warm a welcome in the pub. The pints of Murphys were top class and the service at the bar was efficient and friendly. Brendan reckons that that the bar man was one of the best in Cork and i couldn’t disagree. The pub itself was bigger than i imagined from the outside. It is long and to be fair there are plenty of seating areas. There is a pool table available in its own area just inside the front door. I got the impression that this was a real locals bar as...

You spelled my name wrong!, is it because I’m Irish? via Ambrand.com February 5th, 2010 at 13:42

My name is let us say John O’Shea, so my surname is O’Shea Note how The first letter is Capitalised (of course) There is an apostophe (no spaces either side) The first letter of the Shea is capitalised My surname is not O Shea (makes it look like the O an initial of a middle name) OShea (at least they capitalised the S) Oshea (no comment!) Shea (dropping the O is often referred to as ‘taking the soup’, a term with political and religions connotations beyond the scope of this article!) The only variation that could be correct would be ifI was being referred to in the Irish language (or Gaelic as I recently heard it called on an episode of Murder She Wrote) where it would be Ó Sé Now, this might sound pedantic, but having a surname of Irish origin, that is...

Bringing that Hip-house back! via StevieGBlog February 5th, 2010 at 09:34

It is interesting to look at the pop charts in the last couple of years and see how house and electro music has become so popular among the mainstream. Never ones to miss a beat, many of the higher profile hip-hop and r&b artists have jumped on the bandwagon too and the tempos of many of the biggest hits are quite high these days. This makes sense, particularly as dance-floors are easier to fill with more uptempo music, and with some of the best producers in pop music being from an r&b and hip-hop background, there is no shortage of armour in these chart assaults. Will I Am, Timbaland, the Neptunes and many more have always been at the forefront of taste-making in the charts these last few years, and all continue to enjoy huge success. We have been there before though, and...

MaePad for the N900 begs for a printer. via Branedy February 4th, 2010 at 22:41

I’ve been playing with the early release of MaePad and it’s quite a lot of fun. Like a sketch pad / notepad / finger paint thing. The only thing it needs is the ability to print it out in it’s full glory. And that brings back to the point about the Nokia N900, it really is a computer with a phone app installed. And while you can live without a printer for your phone, having a computer without a printer is missing something....

UCC Lecture: “Risk Intelligence” – How expert gamblers can teach us all to make better decisions” via Damien Mulley February 4th, 2010 at 21:59

image Test your risk intelligence. Got this via a press release: As the current financial crisis demonstrates, many people are bad at thinking about risk. Expert gamblers, however, seem to be an exception. They are less prone to the cognitive biases that affect most of us and as a result, they can think about risk more clearly. In the next lecture of the 2010 College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) Public Lecture Series at UCC, Dr Dylan Evans will present his initial findings from recent interviews conducted with expert gamblers and outline some ways for thinking more wisely about risky choices. The lecture titled: “Risk Intelligence” – How expert gamblers can teach us all to make better decisions” will be delivered on Wednesday, February 10th at 8pm in Boole IV...
